Boston Marathon 2013

Boston Marathon 2013

I was registered to run.  My hotel was booked.  That hotel where the first bomb went off, yep that was my hotel.  So many what ifs . . . what if I hadn't decided to go next year instead, what if that was my family waiting right outside the doors.  What causes a person to have so much hatred that they want to harm so many innocent people?  How truly horrific to turn moments of human triumph in the greatest marathon to complete sadness.

March Bulletin board right side. More Precious than Gold

I precut cardboard circles.  Then each child had to draw what was more precious than Gold to them.  The next step took a couple of hours, but turned out cool.  I used a glue gun to outline their pictures.  Then spray painted them to look like gold coins.

March Bulletin Board left side.

The butterflies are flying by wire that I coiled and have them springing from.

March Bulletin Board

March's boards were hard to miss, but the kids loved it!  The teacher across the hall didn't mind having hers done too :)

2nd Grade February Bulletin Board

I had the kids write notes to people they loved.  With grey paint and a brush, I painted on a postal seal.  Then used sticker letters to add the date and Mrs. Miller's Class. I love adding 3-D dimension to the boards i.e. letters and fishing line hanging from the ceiling, a bag full of letters popping out, and with a glue gun you can a "drool" to the dog house, tongue and letters.

February Bulletin Board

Valentines Bulletin Board.  I made cut outs of the teacher, some kiddos and the principal peeking down from the top.  For the art project I had them put construction paper hearts on a hot plate (low heat) and they melted crayons on the hearts to decorate.

Running makes you sane or insane?

I've always said running is my sanity without it I'm a grouch.  It's my daily therapy.  If I have a good run at a great pace, oh Happy Day!  But then again with it, I do crazy things . . .
What sane person gets up early every Saturday to run for a couple of hours? . . . . in the freezing cold.
I have been so cold that my eyelashes have frozen shut and I need to wipe them with a glove, my ipod froze, my water bottle froze solid, my hair froze and yet I got up early and ran.
I started questioning my sanity when I was thinking of yesterday's run.  My leg had hurt so bad most of the week due to a pinched sciatic nerve that I could barely walk.  Finally, I gave in and went to a chiropractor.  He readjusted me then did electric therapy (once again I'm questioning my sanity with electricity coursing through my body).  Anyways, I rested for a day got up at 5 a.m. and to see if I was up for a 20 mile run that day did two loops around the living room.  I deemed myself miraculously healed and took off on a run.  I'm pretty sure sane people don't behave in this manner.

Favorite Running App

Love STRAVA!!!  Maybe it's the business finance major in me, but I love the numbers.  Another reason why I love running, it's all about the numbers . . . how fast, how far, your PR, elevation gain or loss it is endless.  I also might be a teeny bit LOTS competitive.  STRAVA anaylzes your run.  It tells you who else ran that same segment of a route and where you rank, elevation gain and loss, maps your route, keeps track of your runs and total miles and so much more.  Added Bonus for the award seeker in you.  STRAVA gives you little trophies when you are top ranked on a route and when you PR on different running segments.  Basically, if you have the STRAVA route and you run in my area the race is on :)

"What's in Your Future"
I had the kids draw a picture of something in their future inside on precut circle papers.  I covered the picture with clear saucers to make them look like crystal balls.

Dr. Seuss Teacher Appreciation Door Decoration

The theme for teacher appreciation week is Dr. Seuss, what better book to choose than Oh the Places You'll Go.  It's one of my favorite books because it is full of great advice about life.  At the very end of the book it says "And will you succeed?
                               Yes! You will, indeed!
                               (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)
                               Kid, You'll Move Mountains
                               So . . .
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
                               you're off to Great Places!
                               Today is your day!
                                Your mountain is waiting.
                                So get on your way!

I made it look like a giant book and had all the cute 2nd graders sign their name after so be you name . . .

With me it's always in the detail.  The teacher doesn't like her window covered so it made it look like the thing crate with a window in it.  On it is "26 Things Inside" and "Do Not Open" with a Seuss balloon carrying it away.

I've finally joined the world of Blogging!

I'm a mom of five, very active kids.  When I'm not running them around, I love to lace up the shoes and go for a run.  Running is my sanity!  Luckily, I have a very patient hubby who I love.  I'm also a TA in the 5th grade where I get to use my creativity to make math and language arts fun (the students may have a different opinion).
